Lovely shot!

I went to Whitecross Green Wood near me recently. It featured in the Indepents hunt for every species of butterfly. The rare, Brown Hair Streak was one of the last to be accounted for and can only be found in two locations in Britain; including this wood. I popped down and of course didn't see it but I did stumble across a bench with about 18 of these sunning themselves. I think they are one of m favourites animals. When they buzz past you it is quite something. Is he actually flying, this is quite some shot Dave. Great colours too.

Wow, thanks for the comments :) I didn't realise anyone would still be watching my photoblog. Eric, they are indeed dragonflies (cf. damselflies which are much smaller). I would love to see some of the rarer butterflies, Mr. Anonymous :) Hawkers, like this, tend to fly for long periods then hand vertically in trees to rest. This photo was taken on the wing. I expect you saw the darters (Common Darter, I expect) which tend to sit on the floor and on benches when looking for prey. Thanks again for the comments :)

Mr Anonymous was mooch who failed to leave his details. The wood is small, unremarkable (in that they have wide rides, closely mown) but harbours these creatures. One of only two locations in the UK.
